Charu is an accomplished Bharathanatyam dancer who has studied under the (late) Padmashri K.N. Dandayudhapani Pillai, the renowned abhinaya teacher, Padmabhushan Kalanidhi Narayananan and other masters. Her dance has been judged by critics in India and the United States as "paying unswerving fealty to classical rigor" and one commented that "(if she had) not taken to far-off shores, she would certainly have emerged as a close competitor to the leading Bharathanatyam dancers of the younger generation". Charu now practices her art in Northern Virginia and runs a dance school called Nrityakalpana.
